The Review

Someone suggested that as we weren’t on stage on Wednesday the 18th January that we should take a busman’s holiday to see Robinson Crusoe. There was some interest and we ordered 9 tickets at £7.00 each, there being no concession available throughout the run of this show. The price did include a cup of tea/coffee and a biscuit. When we arrived at 7 for a 7.15 start, the tickets were on the door as requested, so we paid and went in to sit on C row. It was about 2/3rds full with no children in at all which I thought was unusual but maybe the price had something to do with this. We had been warned that on one night Davy Jones had frightened a couple of kids with his costume and makeup so the company had given a refund as the family left almost as soon as it started.

The show started on time and the chorus were in evidence straight away singing quite brightly and I think they were joined by everyone else from the side of the stage. It is only a small stage at Harvey Street and when everyone was on there wasn’t much room for dancing but the company seemed to manage ok. The storyline is quite simple but aren’t all Pantomimes. On the night we were there the prompt was worked quite hard but maybe the cast hadn’t looked at their scripts since Saturday night which was 4 days between.

The audience seemed slow to get up to speed with the ethics of Panto, (Oh no they weren’t, oh yes they were) but with the help of one or two regulars, they were all into it at the end.

I particularly like the singing of the two leads (Erica + Eleanor) and I thought that their dueting was exquisite. I also really enjoyed the overall performance of Danny as Wild Man Friday. He was extremely audible, had a nice singing voice and was given some of the best dialogue in the show.

Altogether I thought it was a well put together show, typical of Terry Bowden who I have worked for on quite a few occasions. It will be sad not to be able to watch shows at this venue anymore as closure is imminent and I sincerely hope I see this crew in future shows elsewhere, either singly or together.
