The Victoria Hall has had a Drama Group of sorts dating back to 1955 (first recorded date). The group was not formally known as the Drama Group. They came under titles such as ‘The Sunday School’ or ‘Youth Group’ and either performed plays or Pantomimes over one or two nights. It was only when the stage and hall were done up in 1974 that the title VHADS was used on posters and programmes.

In an effort to raise the money needed to redecorate the hall and upgrade the stage, three members of the society, Graham Ashton and brothers Graham and Barry Massey walked to Southport and back, a round trip of seventy-six miles! They met the Mayor of Southport and brought back a gift from him to the Mayor of Bolton, Alderman Harry Devenish, which they presented to him at a later date. The group painted the hall and did a lot of the refurbishment work themselves only calling in the ‘professionals’ to do the electrics.

The first show in the newly decorated theatre was the Pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk, which was performed over three nights starting on Wednesday 8th January 1975. The price to see it was 25p for adults and 15p for children and O.A.P.s. (A list of all shows from this date can be seen if you click on the List Of Shows tag above.)

The group continues to perform an annual pantomime in January and a play in May and also present the church service in September.

The group has a strong membership with a varied age range. Many of the longer serving members have worked their way from appearing in the chorus to taking the lead roles, but we welcome and embrace anyone with a desire to be involved with theatre, whether it is on stage or behind the scenes.

As a group we often travel to see other productions by local societies and also support members of our own group as they ‘tread the boards’ elsewhere (reviews opposite). We endeavor to fund raise for the church by organizing table top sales and book sales, plus there are books for sale on all the performance nights.

There is a lot of fun and laughter and we hope a lot of enjoyment in being part of a group like this. If there is a little spark inside you to be a part of a drama group, in whatever capacity you feel is right for you, come and have a look at us. There will be something to suit you.
